The California Academy of Sciences actively pursues original scientific research and is committed to fostering a spirit of scientific discovery and stewardship of the natural world. Systematic biology, the focus of the Academy's research, is becoming increasingly important as the understanding of the value of biodiversity grows. Staff in the Academy's eight separate research departments conduct original research, develop and maintain collections, and are directly involved in all educational and outreach activities of the institution.
