This site provides a detailed chronology of the birth and growth of the world wide web. Its pages include links to descriptions of documents and in some cases, the documents themselves, including Tim Berners-Lee's original proposal to create the WWW, press announcements of mergers, and home pages of key individuals in the history of the web. Each year of the chronology includes information about contemporary events that occurred at or near the same time as innovations and advances in world wide web technologies and access.

Adflip is an archive of more than 6,000 print advertisements published from 1940 to the present. The site is privately financed and was created by two individuals who felt that ¨print advertising captures the essence of society at any given time. Products advertised include everything from dog food to DeSotos. The site may be searched by year, product type, and brand name. Many ads may be sent as electronic post-cards for free. For each ad, the site tells when and in what publication it appeared. A 170-word introduction describes the site.

Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
Aerodrome: Aces and Aircraft of World War I

The Areodrome site offers lists of World War I aces, their combat stats, and a chronology of kills and events. The site offers little historical background or narative text; however, the site is useful for short desciptions of many kinds of WWI aircraft, and short bios of specific aces, which include military honors, time, date, and location of their kills, and what aircraft they flew. The site is not searchable, but all of the records are indexed and linked to make the site very easy to navigate.

AeroFiles - American Aviation from 1903 to 2003

This extensive site hosts information about the history of aeronautics on more then 300 pages. Historians of science and technology will find useful the pages devoted to timelines, chronologies, biographies, aircraft, power plants and some of the articles found in the features page. The Aeronautica Archives and Collections page may prove useful to researchers who are attempting to locate major collections in the United States. With so much information, the site is not easily navigated, however patient researchers may find more than a few things of interest here.

The American Institute of Physics has combined exhibits with educational syllabi, and archives in this deep site. Included are exhibits about Madame Currie, Albert Einstein, the electron, the transistor and Werner Heisenberg and the Uncertainty Principle. Archives include thousands of digitized images in the Emilio Sagres visual archive, and the book and manuscript catalogue of the Neils Bohr library.

Albert Einstein Online

Not presenting any original material of its own, this site is a portal for all things related to Albert Einstein. The long list of links includes over 30 references to online material on Einstein's life and work. There are also links to photographs, primary materials, quotations of and by Einstein. In addition, there are links to sites explaining Einstein's complicated physics; some of these sites are designed for advanced science students only, while others are designed for a general audience. Links to dozens of other sites on Einstein, from serious to humorous, round out the site.

Alcohol and Drugs History Society

The Alcohol and Drugs History Society uses this site as a clearing house for news and information relating to their targeted subject area. The site contains excerpts and links to current news articles from around the world as well as book reviews and historical essays. The site also houses the online edition of the society's academic journal, The Social History of Alcohol and Drugs. A menu on the right side of the page allows users to find information on a host of topics including various types of drugs and alcohol and drug related policies and events in specific countries.

Alexander Graham Bell Institute of University College of Cape Breton

An online collection of portions of the Bell Institute's holdings, which are largely reproductions from the Library of Congress. Contains a vast amount of documentation on topics which include correspondence, the Aerial Experiment Association, and lab notes. These are accessible by browsing drop down menus which allow one to choose collection, volume, and page. It also can be searched using predefined or custom keywords. The Bell Family Archive also contains a an image gallery of photos ranging from telephones to kites to family members.
