A newspaper, the Lansing Republican, dated February 5, 1884, reprinted a story from the Grand Traverse Herald pointing out that the experiment to provide all-year service across the Straits by boat had failed, and that if a great east-west route were ever to be established through Michigan a bridge or tunnel would be required. The editor considered both as practicable; the only question in his mind was that of cost.

Annotation: 

The Mackinac Bridge website give facts, figures and historical information about the steel suspension bridge that connected lower Michigan with its upper peninsula after other transportation solutions failed. The Mackinac Bridge is a great example of how modern engineering gradually transformed all parts of the United States. The site includes a brief historical essay with background about the bridge, a list of bridge stats, images, an archive of traffic reports (only going back to the early 1990s, and links to other sources of information. The site is run by the Mackinac Bridge Authority and the site is well designed and well maintained.

A self-made man and one of America’s greatest engineers, James Buchanan Eads led a life inextricably intertwined with the nation’s most important waterway, the Mississippi River. He explored the river bottom in a diving bell of his own design; made a fortune salvaging wrecks; in the 1870s built the world's first steel bridge over the Mississippi at St. Louis; then deepened the river at its mouth, turning New Orleans into the second largest port in the nation. By the time of his death in 1887, Eads was widely acknowledged to be one of the most influential men of his day.

This PBS website, made for the program "The American Experience," is a tome of material relating to the life and career of engineer James Eads. Material includes a transcript of the television show; a list of further reading on Eads; a Flash demonstration of how to build a bridge pier; letters from the Eads family; a gallery of architectural drawings; links to descriptions of the people and events discussed in the program; and a brief section on the Mississippi River jetties today. The site is likely the most extensive archive any researcher will find on Eads, and it is an indispensible resource for anyone looking for information on the Mississippi River engineer.

By 1881, he had established an engineering practice in Pittsburgh, where he built several bridges, including the Smithfield Street Bridge, a stunning example of the lenticular truss. Lindenthal also worked on a variety of railroad projects, including surveying and estimating for rail lines in Pennsylvania and the reconstruction of bridges on what is now the Erie Railroad. In 1885, officials with the Pennsylvania Railroad approached him with a project thtat, although he never got to build it, would fascinate him the rest of his life—a bridge across the Hudson River to link New York City with New Jersey.

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) follows Gustav Lindenthal's career from Austria to the United States, including each of his several bridge-building projects in and around New York City. Thomas Bouch died during the public inquest into the failure of the high girders of the Tay Bridge at his country retreat in Moffat, and is buried at the Dean Cemetery in Edinburgh.

He was the engineer to the Edinburgh and Northern Railway during which time he designed the train ferry crossing between Granton and Burntisland.

Afterwards he became a consulting engineer. As an engineer he had a reputation for being able to build lines very cheaply. He went on to design many short distance lines for companies which could not afford heavy engineering.

Each of the original 33 leaves or folios (66 pages) are reproduced here in digital form for educational use only.
If your screen is set at 800 by 600 pixel resolution the large versions of the pages will appear close to the size of the originals which are approximately 240mm x160mm.
The pages follow the orientation and order in which they were bound together and here the usual convention is followed with each leaf or folio being numbered and the front recto and back verso identified with "r" and "v" respectively.

This is a University of Newcastle archive of Villard de Honnecourt's portfolio. Pages from Villard's notebook are available as separate digital photographs, though a web page with compressed versions of every image allows users to scan for a specific drawing. On June 12, 1806, John A. Roebling, civil engineer and designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, was born in Muehlhausen, Prussia. The Brooklyn Bridge, Roebling's greatest achievement, spans the East River to connect Manhattan with Brooklyn. For nearly a decade after its completion, the bridge, with a main span of 1595 feet, was the longest suspension bridge in the world. Steel wire cable, invented and manufactured by Roebling, made the structure possible.

When the Brooklyn Bridge was opened you had to pay three cents to cross it until it was paid for. When they opened the bridge everybody went to see it..It took them 14 years to build the Brooklyn bridge.
