Remembering Pearl Harbor provides three ways to learn about the attack on Pearl Harbor: a multimedia map and timeline, resources on the history of World War II, and a Memory Book with stories of those who were affected by the attack. The multimedia map incorporates a timeline and personal narratives, while the resources include specific details on the ships and planes involved in the attack and where to look for further information. The Memory Book archive hosts more than 1,000 entries grouped by geographic location of the contributor. The archive is searchable and includes the experiences of witnesses and other involved in World War II, frequently shared by their children and grandchildren.

The Rosie the Riveter Memorial: Honoring American Women's Labor During WWII, is the first national monument to celebrate and interpret women's crucial contributions to the World War Two Home Front. It is located in Richmond, CA, in Rosie the Riveter Memorial Park at the site of the former Kaiser Shipyards, which were the largest and most productive of World War II.

Annotation: 

The Rosie the Riveter Memorial website provides information about the Rosie the Riveter World War II/Home Front National Historic Park in Richmond, California. The park is on the site of the most productive shipyard during the period and the memorial honors American women's labor during WWII. The website has images, sheet music, and illustrative stories from the time, and articles about the memorial. Most importantly there is a request for stories from women who worked on the home front during the war. Respondents can mail a form and offer papers, photographs, or souvenirs from the war or offer to give an interview. Alternatively, they can email their story directly to the National Park Service.

This site tells the story of the Washington Metro, a 103-mile rapid transit system serving Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia. Planning for Metro began in the 1950s, construction began in 1969, and the first segment opened for operation in 1976. Metro is one of the largest public-works projects ever built, and it is the second-busiest rail transit system in the United States.

Metro is the creation of thousands of planners, engineers, architects, and builders, and hundreds of thousands of neighbors and riders. Whatever your role, we hope you will share your own experiences as part of the Echo: Collecting History Online project.

This site tells the story of the Washington Metro, a 103-mile rapid transit system serving the nation’s capital. Metro – one of the largest public-works projects ever built and the second-busiest rail transit system in the United States – is the creation of thousands of planners, engineers, architects, and builders. The vision of Moving Here is to explore, record and illustrate why people came to England over the last 200 years, and what their experiences were and continue to be. The site mainly looks at the Caribbean, Irish, Jewish and South Asian communities but we are growing all the time!

This web site offers free access, for personal and educational use, to online versions of original material related to migration, including photographs, personal papers, government documents, maps and art objects, as well as a collection of sound recordings and video clips.

Annotation: 

A collaborative effort of thirty archives, museums, and libraries, the Moving Here website explores, records, and illustrates the motivations and experiences of immigrants to England over the past 200 years. There are exhibits and galleries outlining the experiences of Caribbean, Irish, Jewish, and South Asian immigrants, and a searchable database of digitized photographs, maps, objects, documents, and audio files. The site also provides a guide to researching family history. Visitors are invited to share their family's migration story and provide personal images through the website. There are already more than 500 stories and images gathered through the website and contemporary community groups.

On the morning of Tuesday, January 23, 1849, a young woman ascended the platform of the Presbyterian church in Geneva, N.Y., and received from the hands of the President of Geneva Medical College a diploma conferring upon her the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Thus, after many years of determined effort, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to complete a course of study at a medical college and receive the M.D. degree.

Annotation: 

This is an online companion to an exhibit on Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female M.D., that was held in 1999 at the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. The site is well designed and easily navigated. The exhibit contains a narrative description of Elizabeth Blackwell's college career, and there are some images of documents such as her Geneva Medical College diploma; however, the images do not have enough resolution to be easily used as a primary sources online. The site is a good background source, and the captions of the images have references to the location of the original documents for visitors who are interested in pursuing further research.

In developing the STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING SLIDE LIBRARY as a comprehensive resource for teaching structural and architectural engineering at college and university level, I felt there was a need to devote a volume to the work of one structural design company. Leonhardt, Andrä and Partners of Stuttgart, Germany, was an ideal choice for this project. One of Europe’s leading structural design companies, its staff has been on the leading edge of many developments in engineering over the past 40 years. Their name has been particularly associated with the development of incrementally launched bridges, cable-stayed bridges, cable-net structures, and prestressed concrete television towers.

Annotation: 

The University of California at Berkeley has compiled a sizeable archive of slides of work by Leonhardt, Andrä and Partners of Stuttgart, Germany. Images are categorized according to their architectural characteristics, the type of material used, or the type of structure pictured. Text content also details some of the structures pioneered by the architecture firm. Useful for architectural case studies and research.

Debate about the descriptor for Victoria's second university was not prolonged and through an enabling Act 1958, Monash University became one of a very few universities in the world named after a military hero. Of German-Jewish immigrant stock Sir John Monash was Australian, indeed Victorian, to the core and is still regarded as Australia's greatest fighting General. He was possessed of such diverse talents that his scholastic failures as a young man serve to remind us that even great men are human and that focus, application and determination are key ingredients for success as much in academia as in other spheres of life.

Annotation: 

This online exhibition features biographical information about engineer John Monash, from his early life, to his time as a soldier, to his lengthy professional life in Australia. However, the true gem of the site is the collection of photographs and other memorabilia donated by the Monash family, such as baby photographs of Monash and scanned facsimilies of his commisions from the Australian government. Though the exhibition has only four web pages of content, the Monash artifacts are scattered on every page, and they are a perfect accompaniment to the data on Wabash himself.

Welcome to the online edition of Bridging the Bay: Bridging the Campus.

...At a time when the Bay Area’s bridges are being analyzed and new structures are being planned, it is important to recognize the diversity and depth of the research collections that exist on the Berkeley campus. The exhibit includes books, documents, architectural drawings and renderings, blueprints, artifacts, maps, and photographs. The bridges documented include the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the Carquinez Bridge, the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, the Antioch Bridge, and the Dumbarton Bridge. The exhibit also contains documents detailing Bay Area bridge projects that were seriously considered, but were never built.

Annotation: 

UC Berkeley's online exhibition includes descriptions of and artifacts related to every major San Francisco Bay-area bridge; however, it devotes a significant amount of space to Joseph Strauss's plans for the Golden Gate Bridge. The Golden Gate section has five subsections - "Design & Construction," "Politics & Financing," "Toll Plaza," "Celebration," "The Color," and "Art & Icon" - each featuring photographs, architectural drawings, newspaper advertisements, and paraphernalia of all sorts from the bridge's inception. A useful resource for students looking for American historical artifacts for the World War II and postwar era, particularly for research purposes.
