Excerpt:

The year 1996 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the ENIAC computer, the first large-scale general-purpose electronic computer. Built at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering, ENIAC is an acronym for "Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer," but its birth lay in World War II as a classified military project known only as Project PX. The ENIAC is important historically, because it laid the foundations for the modern electronic computing industry. More than any other machine, the ENIAC demonstrated that high-speed digital computing was possible using the then-available vacuum tube technology.

This corporate site is more than just fluff. The many exhibits are designed for a general audience and relate largely to current technologies from microprocessors to transistors to memory. Researchers may find the section on Moore's law (Gordon Moore is the Chairman Emeritus of Intel) to be more useful and interesting. This page provides a chart of the growth in processing power and two full-text documents including the 1965 paper in which Moore's law was first elucidated. The History of the Microprocessors exhibit includes a microprocessor hall of fame with descriptions of the evolution of Intel's chips, and Interviews with Visionaries including Tim Berners-Lee and the popular musician Thomas Dolby.

Excerpt:

Archimedes was born in the city of Syracuse on the island of Sicily in 287 BC. He was the son of an astronomer and mathematician named Phidias. Aside from that, very little is known about the early life of Archimedes or his family. Some maintain that he belonged to the nobility of Syracuse, and that his family was in some way related to that of Hiero II, King of Syracuse.

Annotation:

This site is a companion piece to an Archimedes exhibit at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. The Gallery exhibit is centered around The Archimedes Palimpsest, a rare and ancient document that contains a compendium of the Greek mathematicians's work, the only copy of his essay, Method of Mechanical Theorems, and the only source for the treatise, On Floating Bodies, in the original Greek. The site contains a nice timeline and biography of Archimedes' life, an explanation of the historical significance of the Palimpsest, and a history of the discovery and conservation of the piece. The site is professionally designed, informative, and easy to navigate. The site may serve as a resource for historians interested in rare manuscripts and their preservation.

Close to the strictly-technological contribution given by Sandretto in the past 50 years to the development of plastics material processing, the Company promoted a series of cultural activities to provide the general public with wider and deeper information on this important segment of the industry. The most relevant achievement is the Plastics Museum of Pont Canavese, close to Turin, in northern Italy. This is the first Italian Museum of Plastics, and one of the main ones on a worldwide basis. The collection was initiated in 1985 and grew with the years, counting today more than 2500 catalogued pieces. Four years after the opening day, in June 1995, tenths of thousands of visitors have enjoyed the rooms of Sandretto's Plastics Museum.
