The SETI Institute was incorporated as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit California corporation on November 20, 1984. The purpose of the Institute, as defined at that time and still true today, is to conduct scientific research and educational projects relevant to the origin, nature, prevalence, and distribution of life in the universe. This work includes two primary research areas: 1) SETI, and 2) Life in the Universe. Concurrent with its research focus, the Institute strives to contribute to both formal and informal science education related to these fields of interest. Over its eighteen year history, the Institute has administered over $150 million of funded research.

An annotated bibliography of published and unpublished works on the history of the Smithsonian Institution is available on-line. Included are journal articles, monographs, reports, dissertations, and oral history interviews. Topics covered include administration, buildings, collections, exhibits, expeditions, public programs, Smithsonian Secretaries, and women's history.

Annotation: 

This site includes information about archives at the Smithsonian Institution, as well as a few on-line exhibits. The papers of Joseph Henry, the first Secretary of the Institution, who also helped to create telegraphs and electricity, are available online, along with several primary documents. The Smithsonian also hosts the papers of many of the scientists and historians of science who have worked at the Smithsonian since its foundation. Some of the more important figures such as Charles P. Alexander, a zoologist, and Charles D. Walcott, a geologist and Secretary of the Institute, have biographies attached to the description of their papers. There are also finding guides to the collections and descriptions of various research databses and how to access them. The site is imformative and well maintained.

Manuscripts and Archives is a major Yale center for historical documentation, promoting and sustaining the research and teaching missions of the University, and serving as the documentary memory of the Yale community. The resources and services of Manuscripts and Archives are available to all members of the Yale community as well as to researchers from outside the University who wish to make use of them.

Annotation: 

The website for Yale University Manuscripts and Archives offers users a number of tools for finding information and preparing for a visit. The site contains a collections overview with brief descriptions of each series. The Manuscripts and Archives Digital Images Database (MADID) offers a few images of photographs, artwork, drawings, and text from many of the collections. There is also information on making requests and research inquiries.

This site is most notable for its on-line exhibitions. Topics covered include Astronomy, Navigation and Exploration. Researchers may find the exhibits about George Airy, Edmund Halley, William and Caroline Herschel, and the Story of Longitude. Each exhibit includes information about various aspects of the subject. The site also includes other useful pages about the history of the observatory, astronomy and navigation in addition to brief biographies of the fifteen astronomers royal.

Each section contains a timeline and narrative of events leading to the achievement that was honored, profiles of the winners, and a short video presentation explaining the importance of their work. The site gives a biography of Nobel himself as well.
