Scientific and medical illustration is often characterized by a twofold need: for accuracy and for clarity in presenting information. It would be more appropriate, however, to say that such illustration is utilized in assisting the reader in "seeing" information within the context of a particular theory or scientific reality. Some images present theory based on careful study. Other images are based on observed, though selective, reality. A third type of image shows the way to conduct an experiment or procedure, or simply the equipment needed. The developments in book illustration techniques shown on this website should be viewed with an eye to economic factors which have always been a major component of book production.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History
Excerpt:

In the late 1970s, interest in a natural history museum grew beyond the reach of the sciences. The trustees wished to add programs and facilities for the general public to the existing school-focused program at Fernbank
Science Center.
Fernbank, Inc. hired Graham Gund Architects to design the striking, 160,000 square foot museum. Ground was broken in 1989, and on October 5, 1992, Fernbank Museum of Natural History opened, becoming the only natural history museum in the world located in a natural environment.
Since then, the Museum has continued to grow and expand its collection. In 2001 Fernbank became the first museum in the world to display the world's largest dinosaur, Argentinosaurus. This gargantuan sauropod is now a permanent feature in the Museum's 86-foot tall atrium along with the world's largest carnivorous dinosaur, Giganotosaurus, a flock of pterosaurs and a variety of other contemporaneous species in the Museum's newest permanent exhibition, Giants of the Mesozoic.

The Cumulative Bibliography on the History of Oceanography (CBHO) is published annually in the History of Oceanography Newsletter in order to gather in one place the scattered literature on the history of oceanography. CBHO strives to list all works on the history of oceanography. Biographical items like biographies and obituaries are compiled separately and will be incorporated into this web site in the future.
CBHO was compiled from 1987 to 1997 by Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre, Secretary of the Commission of Oceanography of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science, Division of History of Science and is being compiled from 1998 to present by Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archivist. There is no comprehensive bibliography on the history of oceanography before 1987.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for marine science research, graduate training, and public service in the world.
Scripps Institution was founded in 1903 as an independent biological research laboratory, which became part of the University of California in 1912. At that time the laboratory was given the Scripps name in recognition of supporters Ellen Browning Scripps and E. W. Scripps.
Scripps staff numbers approximately 1,300, including about 90 faculty, nearly 300 other scientists, and some 200 graduate students. The institution's annual expenditures total more than $140 million.
Research at Scripps encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans. Ongoing investigations include the topography and composition of the ocean bottom, waves and currents, and the flow and interchange of matter between seawater and the ocean bottom or the atmosphere. Scripps's research ships are used in these investigations throughout the world's oceans.

Some maps deliberately set out to deceive. Many show a selective view and reflect only the interests of the people who made them. Stunning maps from ancient to modern reveal a secret world. In every case there is more than meets the eye.
As well as over 100 maps and other exhibits from the British Library's superlative collections, there are interactive screens and events to help you explore the themes further.
