Museum

The San Francisco Computer Museum and accompanying Computer Institute are being founded to provide a global center for bringing together the scientific, artistic, and cultural aspects of computing. Because computer technology represents one of the most profound human achievements, the San Francisco Computer Museum will record those very achievements and, through an accompanying research center, will stimulate the creation of new breakthroughs as well. The Computer Institute and the San Francisco Computer Museum will aim to become the world's leading museum facility and non-profit research center devoted to computing.

The 20th century is marked by dramatic technology innovation. The time-warp project is an attempt to archive the rapid advance in technology through the decades. Initially we are starting from 1900 to the present. So much has happened since the harnessing of electricity!

I have added a new feature to the museum for your convenience. I have discovered the wonderful world of pop-up windows. So now within each exhibit's description are key words that are highlighted and underlined. If you place the mouse pointer over any of them (no click necessary) a text box with a description will appear. Try Me. I hope that this new feature will enhance the usefulness of my museum. Please bear with me as it will take some time to finish all the exhibits. I am starting with the Commodore Wing first and will ad pop-ups to all of the wings. The Tech is a cosmopolitan museum singularly focused on technology—how it works and the way that it is changing every aspect of the way we work, live, play and learn. Its people-and-technology focus and the integration of advanced technologies into visitor experiences and infrastructure, distinguishes it from other science centers.

The emphasis of the collection of the Computer Museum is on technical and scientific electronic computing equipment from World War II up till today. However the collection also includes tools from the pre-computer era: mechanical, electromechanical and electronic calculators, slide rules and tables. There are some word-processors and a small collection of home computers. Accounting machines, game computers and the like are beyond the scope of this museum.
Most of the machines are in working order, equipped with original system and application software and fully documented.

The American Museum of Natural History is a nonprofit research institution chartered as a Museum and Library by the State of New York in 1869. Since that time the Library has grown into the largest natural history library in the Western Hemisphere. The Library's primary function is to serve and support the work of the Museum's scientific staff. The Library also serves scholars in natural history from around the world, as well as interested members of the general public. The Library's holdings are comprised of a research collection, special collections, and digital collections.

The Institute was established in 1997 to excavate, preserve, research, and present interesting and historically significant computing devices. Our headquarters are located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and our museum and research facilities are located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Some of the Institute's computers are on loan to the VintageTech Archive in Oakland, California.
We have limited space and resources, but we often do accept donations of pre-1981 computer-related material, and if we cannot accept a donation, we can often refer donors to other organizations and individual collectors who can.

The National Plastics Center and Museum is a non-profit institution dedicated to preserving the past, addressing the present and promoting the future of plastics through public education and awareness. The educational staff has supported this mission throughout the years by conducting hands-on science programming for schools, organizations and the plastics community.
