Why do the British and American approaches to machinery differ? A short history of machine tools explains why. No two countries were more responsible for the Industrial Revolution than America and England. In England, during the 18th and 19th centuries there was no shortage of skilled labor. Rather than replacing English workers, their machines made work more precise. Meanwhile, in sparsely populated America, the needs of a new nation required rapid and simple means of production. Machines augmented the scant work force. In England, machines served to make talented artisans better. In America, machines served to make entrepreneurs more productive.

Excerpt:

Early Canadiana Online (ECO) is a digital library providing access to over 1,522,000 pages of Canada's printed heritage. It features works published from the time of the first European settlers up to the early 20th Century.

ECO is produced by the Canadian Institute for Historical Microreproductions (CIHM), a nonprofit organization for preserving and providing access to early Canadian publications, first on microfiche and now online.

ECO began in 1997 as a pilot project to create an online digital library. Over three years, 550,000 pages of text were taken from the CIHM's microfiche collection and scanned into digital images. This part of the collection remains free and accessible to the general public.

The second phase of ECO began in 2000 and is scheduled to continue to 2004. During this time, 1,250,000 pages of colonial, federal, and provincial government publications will be scanned and published. This portion of the collection is available to all registered ECO members.

Along the way, a few special projects have also been added to the collection. These include 20,000 pages of text detailing the history of Hudson's Bay Company, and 22,500 pages of Jesuit Relations texts, translated into English by Reuben Thwaites. These collections are also accessible to the general public.

This is a pilot site for the electronic edition of the correspondence of Linnaeus now being prepared under the aegis of the Swedish Linnaean Society, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Uppsala University and its library, and the Linnean Society of London, in collaboration with the Centre international d’étude du XVIIIe siècle of Ferney-Voltaire. The project is financed by the research foundation of the Swedish National Bank.

Annotation:

This is a useful sight that contains much more than Linnaeus' Correspondence. In fact, the many letters reproduced here only form the backbone of a larger project that includes an extensive bibliography of works relied upon by Linnaeus, written by Linneaus, and written about Linneaus. The site also includes a good introduction and chronology of the eighteenth century biologist. The letters, written in a variety of languages, including one in French from Jean Jacques Rousseau to Linnaeus, include explanatory notes that appear in a small frame to the left, an interesting innovation, though the longer notes get spread out vertically as opposed to horizontally.
