SCALE
From ToolCenter
Digital libraries contain a vast array of names, such as personal and geographic names. The SCALE project has developed tools that automatically recognize terms from encyclopedias, glossaries and author reference works in unstructured text, and automatically generate links from the text to the reference works. These services are designed to help students, professionals outside a particular discipline, and the interested public read documents full of unfamiliar technical terms and concepts. These services can be of particular help to undergraduates as they shift from textbooks to scientific literature.
This project is collaboration among two groups at Tufts University: the Digital Collections and Archives and the Perseus Project; and two groups at Johns Hopkins University: the Digital Knowledge Center and the National Virtual Observatory (NVO) of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
