History Wired is an online visualization of objects from the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. "The ALG image analysis tool, I2K, is capable of analyzing multidimensional, multi-variate image data and allows the user to interact with the data. The environment also provides histogram, image ranking, image statistics, correlation matching, image thresholding, and isodata clustering. The tool handles multiple file formats such as jpg, gif, tif, pgm, ppm, and lan, and can handle combination bands from several image data sources. In addition, this environment offers a new image file format .iip (multi-band image with interleaved pixels) that can be displayed inside the tool or in your favorite web browser. Especially notable about the iip format is it's capacity for handling all possible datatypes (byte, short, integer, long, float, double). The images at right illustrate an integrated application and interface currently being developed by ALG that will process and analyze microarray image data. This effort takes already developed I2K technology and merges it into a single, unified interface."

"As a research unit of the University of Virginia, IATH's goal is to explore and expand the potential of information technology as a tool for humanities research. To that end, we provide our Fellows with consulting, technical support, applications programming, and networked publishing facilities. We also cultivate partnerships and participate in humanities computing initiatives with libraries, publishers, information technology companies, scholarly organizations, and others interested in the intersection of computers and cultural heritage." The work of the Institute is funded by The Macarthur Foundation, The Mellon Foundation, and the two host-institutions, The Annnenberg Center for Communication at the University of Southern California and Columbia University. THE INSTITUTE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE BOOK.

Introduction

For more than 500 years, books —printed pages bound together — have served as the central mechanism for storing and transmitting knowledge.

Their effectiveness derives from:

• portability

• relative ease of manufacture and distribution

• authority — the permanence of the object confers confidence in authorship

• ease of reference — the division of a book into pages enables a “conversation” about the contents to take place over space and time

• random access — a reader may absorb the contents at whatever rate and in whatever order she likes

Over the next several decades, electronic, screen-based technologies will emerge which preserve all that is good and wonderful about printed books but which add profoundly powerful new capabilities. For example, future books will:

• allow authors to express ideas using audio, video and simulations in addition to text and graphics.

• contain significant and direct links to materials stored elsewhere on the internet.

• create a community of readers and authors by enabling people reading the same document or exploring the same subject area to connect to each other directly over the internet.

While it may be argued that the form of printed books (pages bound together by a spine) was inevitable, the new screen-based books has no such inevitable physically-imposed form. The challenge confronting us is to develop new forms that empower both authors and readers and enhance intellectual and social discourse throughout society.

We are inventing the future of human communication, and we need to do a good job of it.

The mission of the Institute for the Future of the Book is to play an important role in developing the form and function of books in the digital era.

The institute will be a place where artists, scholars, and technologists collaborate to address a broad range of questions, such as:

• how to define and assure authority of the text within a dynamic medium

• how readers know “where they are” within the more complex structures afforded by digital books

• how to integrate text with audio and video so that they do not work at cross-purposes. (This is key to the development of new rhetorical devices at the center of intellectual discourse.)

• working to define new ways of navigating and parsing complex “data spaces” – e.g. what high-level alternatives to the index might be devised?

• typography and iconography designed specifically for the screen

• in a wired world, how to encourage and enable readers to link to each other and to the author

• what is the best way to take several thousand years of analog culture into the digital era in a way that respects the original form but that also exploits the potential of emerging technologies to help readers see, hear, and read better?

The work of the institute will fall into three areas:

• Tool-making

Print culture owes its richness in large part to the fact that the tools required to write are simple and ubiquitous. If a similarly broad-based culture is to arise around screen-based electronic books, we need completely new, easy to use tools that will allow large numbers of people to author complex multimedia documents without the services of a programmer.

• Inspiring examples

The Institute will work to develop fully-realized dynamic, interactive digital documents that will serve as exemplars. As funds allow, visiting artists and technologists will be invited to the institute to work on new forms.

• Summarizing lessons and encouraging discussion

The institute will host symposia and conferences to encourage vigorous discussion of the key problems involved in the development of digital books.

It will also publish a web-based electronic journal to summarize, compare and disseminate advances in the field.

The institute is hosted by The Annenberg Center for Communication at USC.

"The METS schema is a standard for encoding descriptive, administrative, and structural metadata regarding objects within a digital library, expressed using the XML schema language of the World Wide Web Consortium. The standard is maintained in the Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of Congress, and is being developed as an initiative of the Digital Library Federation." The Madison Digital Image Database seems to specialize in the creation of image "slideshows" for teaching or presentation. It's released as GNU open source software.

"MDID 2 is an ASP.NET web application using IIS on Windows 2000 or 2003 Server. Supported databases are MySQL 4 and Microsoft SQL Server 2000. The application, database, and images may reside on different servers." Also seems to require Flash on user's end. Martus was developed by Benetech, "whose mission is to bring the immense power of technology to bear on social problems such as human rights, literacy, education and disability access."

The application itself involves a server and a client program, and allows basic submission and collection of human rights violation reports in plain text format, along with attached documents or images. The data structure is very simple, but the distinguishing aspect of this application is the level of security afforded to users - data transmission is encrypted to ensure the privacy of sensitive reports, and the open source nature of the software makes clear that no user data is captured. "Media Matrix (patent pending): an online tool that allows students and educators to find, segment, annotate and organize streaming media found on the Internet. Media Matrix is a server side application that works within web browsers, using the browser's bookmark feature. When users find a digital object at a digital library or while surfing the Internet, they simply click the Media Matrix bookmark and it searches through the page, finds the digital media, and loads it into an editor. The users can then isolate any portion of a whole video or audio clip and segment it, resize and crop images, save text, and add their own annotations to that media. Using Media Matrix, teachers can collect and present media for the classroom, students can integrate media into their assignments, and scholars can perform the kinds of tasks performed in traditional libraries with analog objects (gather resources, take notes, publish findings)."

Introduction

Welcome to the home page of MetaCombine, a Mellon-funded project hosted at Emory University. MetaCombine is a part of Emory's MetaScholar Initiative. The goal of MetaCombine is to experiment with methods to more meaningfully combine digital library resources and services, and, whenever possible, demonstrate the deployment of these methods. Below is an overview based on the initial project proposal to Mellon. Overview July 2003 Executive Summary Emory University seeks to conduct practical experimentation with improved techniques for organization and access to scholarly information via the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) as well as the World Wide Web. Through the proposed project, Emory will explore combinations of information and services at various levels of abstraction: combined search of OAI and Web resources, combined semantic clusters of information, and combined digital library components acting as a whole. Hence, the project name: MetaCombine.

Key Points

1) The MetaCombine project will assess the effectiveness of several specific semantic clustering techniques (see glossary for a description of this approach to information organization) for improving organization and access to bodies of metadata exposed via the OAI-PMH as well as Web resources. The focus will be on two prominent techniques: the support vector machine (SVM) class of algorithms and multidimensional scaling (MDS) visualization (see glossary for an overview of these methodologies). Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls. For users who have free, or fixed-price Internet access, Internet telephony software essentially provides free telephone calls anywhere in the world. To date, however, Internet telephony does not offer the same quality of telephone service as direct telephone connections. There are many Internet telephony applications available. Some, like CoolTalk and NetMeeting, come bundled with popular Web browsers. Others are stand-alone products. Internet telephony products are sometimes called IP telephony, Voice over the Internet or Voice over IP products.

(There is currently no text in this page) NINES: "Over the past ten years a growing body of digital scholarly work has been undertaken, much of it put online, nearly all of it executed without peer review processes, none of it integrated (except by hyperlinking). NINES is a project to found a publishing environment for integrated, peer-reviewed online scholarship centered in nineteenth-century studies, British and American." "During the past two years, a team of computer scientists and programmers at NITLE has developed a prototype of the NITLE Semantic Engine (NSE). This prototype was designed to address the universal problem of accessing and organizing large amounts of unstructured digital text. Using mathematical algorithms to index the latent semantic content of documents, the prototype engine has been demonstrated to drastically reduce, if not eliminate, the need for expensive and time-consuming metadata tagging, and to produce results superior to keyword searches in limited test domains.

The NITLE Semantic Engine (NSE) is at the center of NITLE's research and development mission. It is designed to enable scholars and educators to manage the already overwhelming and ever-increasing volume of data that we encounter in every field of inquiry. NITLE plans to develop a set of tools that will enable researchers to quickly search large datasets that may be distributed across multiple databases, to interact with the engine to refine the search, and to contribute their knowledge to the collection. We also plan to devise a set of visualization and archiving tools for the researcher to use, to facilitate the organization and dissemination of the search results." NVivo is a qualitative research software tool developed by QSR International that focuses on the relationship between multimedia objects that have been uploaded and coded by the resercher. It also allows the importation of RTF files in addition to manual typing of data.

The products of this project will include an Enterprise Services-based Portal, a complete Course Management System with sophisticated assessment tools, a Research Support Collaboration System, a Workflow Engine, and a Technology Portability Profile as a clear standard for writing future tools that can extend this core set of educational applications.

The modular, pre-integrated tools will greatly reduce the implementation costs of one or more of these tools at any institution. The Sakai Project Core universities are committing over $2 million per year to launch and support this two year project. The core universities are also committed to implementing these tools at their own institutions starting in Fall 2004 through the duration of the project. The commitment of resources and adoption is purposefully set on an aggressive timeline to swiftly integrate and synchronize the educational software at the core institutions. This effort will demonstrate the compelling economics of “software code mobility” for higher education, and it will provide a clear roadmap for others to become part of an open source community." "The UC Berkeley Interactive University's Scholar's Box project seeks to translate commonplace teacher practices into the digital realm so that teachers can more easily integrate into teaching the digital cultural objects available from museums and libraries. We seek to do this not only for individual teachers but for groups of teachers and/or content and collection experts working together to create curriculum resources. Early versions of the IU's "Scholar's Box" tool already demonstrate the promise for faculty, students, and the public to create, manipulate, annotate, and share personal collections of digital cultural objects gathered from multiple digital repositories. The IU is building both a Scholar's Box tool as well as an abstraction framework that defines functionality and APIs for other possible implementations." Scribe 2.5 is a free cross-platform note-taking program designed especially with historians in mind. Think of it as the next step in the evolution of traditional 3x5 note cards. Scribe allows you to manage your research notes, quotes, thoughts, contacts, published and archival sources, digital images, outlines, timelines, and glossary entries. You can create, organize, index, search, link, and cross-reference your note and source cards. You can assemble, print, and export bibliographies, copy formatted references to clipboard, and import sources from online catalogs. You can store entire articles, add extended comments on each card in a separate field, and find and highlight a particular word within a note or article. Scribe's uses range from an undergraduate history research seminar to a major archival research project.

http://www.futureofthebook.org/tool/tk4/ Building on the TK3 model, the institute has begun work on an entirely new set of authoring tools, retaining the proven assets of the current version, but in many ways starting from scratch. The new program, SOPHIE, will offer greater flexibility and a host of powerful new capabilities not available in TK3. Most significantly, its file structure will be open, unlike TK3, which operated on a proprietary model - closed to the outside and non-extensible.

As in TK3, a completed SOPHIE book can be distributed on discrete media such as thumb drives, DVD or CD-ROM, or downloaded from the Internet. Unlike TK3, SOPHIE will allow books to be streamed over the Internet, and eventually, to be accessed directly through the plug-in architecture of a web browser. SOPHIE will contain the same (though improved) drag-and-drop media assembly system developed in TK3, the same reader mark-up capabilities, as well as integrated true-type fonts and style sheets unavailable in the current version.

The user will be able to enter text and build simple graphic elements directly in the document; import images, video, or sound from multiple sources; and create time-based annotations that will allow a text window or illustration to open at a specified moment. More sophisticated users will be able to arrange the materials in much more complex ways - for example, by making a film or piece of music the "spine" of the book, and then annotating the presentation with text or other media types. Most important, SOPHIE will be completely open-source, with the expectation that users will add to it and improve upon it.

The target of the project is higher education, with the intent that the SOPHIE system will be fully integrated into the digital infrastructure currently being developed under the auspices of the Mellon Foundation's programs in Research in Information Technology and Scholarly Communications. As low-cost, low-weight, high-resolution, tablet-like computing devices become widely available, reading on a screen will become as comfortable as reading from a printed book. Once it is possible for students and teachers to produce electronic documents that are as easy to use as printed books, paper will have few advantages over electronic media, and the switch to digital will be rapid and decisive. "The Speculative Computing Laboratory (SpecLab) was organized to promote experimental and exploratory research in Digital Humanities. SpecLab projects build on work in applied digital humanities -- at the Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, Virginia Center for Digital History, E-Text and elsewhere -- that has established the University of Virginia as a leader in humanities computing. By definition, SpecLab projects are interdisciplinary and innovative, often undertaken with uncertain outcomes for the sake of expanding the methods and assumptions of Digital Humanities." "The Streetprint Engine began with a simple idea.

A collection of British street literature needed an online home, a place where students and researchers could interact with these fragile texts as though they were sitting down with the original artifacts. The technological complexity of this task soon became a problem; specialists in centuries-old popular print are rarely internet wizards.

In search of an ideal solution, our team in the CRC Studio at the University of Alberta developed the Streetprint Engine, free software that gives researchers and collectors (like YOU!) easy-to-use tools to create powerful digital archives and share them on the web.

We broadened our focus along the way, creating a system which can now showcase much more than "street print." We like to think, however, that the ideals which underlie our first collection — finding value in the popular and the importance of public circulation, among others — remain at the core of the Streetprint Engine's mission.

The visual look of every Streetprint site can be customized to suit the collection it showcases, and nearly every aspect of a Streetprint site's setup and maintenance is controlled through our simple and intuitive administrative web interface.

Our latest release — Streetprint Engine 3.0 public beta — adds many new features including CSS layouts, new ways to search, browse, and view collection items, customizable fields, blog-style news posting, a glossary feature, an OAI-compliant metadata repository, and much more." Swish-e is a fast, flexible, and free open source system for indexing collections of Web pages or other files. Swish-e is ideally suited for collections of a million documents or smaller. Using the GNOME™ libxml2 parser and a collection of filters, Swish-e can index plain text, e-mail, PDF, HTML, XML, Microsoft® Word/PowerPoint/Excel and just about any file that can be converted to XML or HTML text. Swish-e is also often used to supplement databases like the MySQL® DBMS for very fast full-text searching. Check out the full list of features The Syllabus Finder is a part of the suite of tools developed at George Mason University's Center for History and New Media.

The Syllabus Finder is an experiment in the fledgling world of web services, where computers talk directly to each other to try to solve complicated problems or complete tasks that would be difficult to do otherwise. In this case, the computers that talk to each other are the Center for History and New Media's web server and Google's web server. The Syllabus Finder sends an optimized, specially packaged version of your query to Google, which sends back information and possible matches. The Syllabus Finder then processes this information and combines it with simultaneous searches on in-house databases (e.g., a database of educational institutions, so it can tell you which university or college a syllabus comes from). It also has algorithms that try to extract additional information from matching syllabi, such as assigned books. When this complex process is finished, the Syllabus Finder displays all of the information it has found.

The Syllabus Finder uses the Google Web API, PHP, PEAR, SOAP, and MySQL.

"Knowledge discovery is the process of uncovering relationships in data previously unknown and extracting this knowledge from the data. Even using current data mining methods, understanding these data relationships can be a difficult task. Data stores in any given problem area are often huge, forcing decision-makers to construct complex queries to reflect the multiple dimensions of their problem domain. These decision-makers would benefit from tools that help highlight potential "information nuggets" and that help in the formation of the complex queries.

Often, a large percentage of these data stores is in the form of text. The T2K (Text to Knowledge) tool provides text mining and analysis capabilities that have been specially designed to operate in and capitalize upon the complexity of rich natural language domains of very large stores of text and multimedia documents.

TK3 runs on Macintosh and Windows and offers the first real drag-and-drop assembly kit for rich media. With TK3, the user is able to write directly in the document, and can import video, audio, text and graphics from other sources. The user can import images from a digital camera, or sound from a built-in microphone, allowing them to build documents that are highly personalized. More advanced users can build sophisticated graphic or animated elements in other programs, which can then be imported to their book template.

TK3 also contains a host of tools that allow the reader to mark up the electronic document in much the same way that they would mark up a printed book. In addition to sticky note, hiliter, notebook and dog-earing functions, the reader can run a concordance search of any word or phrase within a book, or across several books, and also can make audio or video notes, and share those notes with other readers. When completed, a book can be distributed on discrete media such as DVD or thumb drives, or downloaded from the web.

Several textbooks have been made with TK3 by major publishers, including W.W. Norton, Addison-Wesley, and Houghton-Mifflin. Students at USC and other universities are using TK3 in their classes to author "multimedia" papers. The students require little or no instruction in how to use the program, and are enthusiastic about being able to express their ideas in a more complex form than a written paper.

The <teiPublisher>, an extensible, modular and configurable xml-based repository, is being created by a team of programmers and content developers. This is being done by providing the tools to manage an extensible, modular and configurable XML-based repository which will house, search, browse, and display documents encoded in TEI-Lite on the World Wide Web.

<teiPublisher> is designed to provide administrative tools to help repository managers with limited technical knowledge manage their repositories. Building on the native XML database eXist, the application provides a range of administrative functions crucial to maintaining a web-assessable digital repository, including:
establishing an XML repository for TEI-Lite-encoded documents;
uploading and deleting documents;
analyzing XML document instances to determine elements for searching and browsing;
developing ontology consistency and refining ontology development;
indexing and storing XML documents for efficient search and retrieval;
generating search/browse, results and metadata display pages for end users;
providing an extensible framework with plugin architecture;
creating inter and intra document links;
partitioning the repository into collections;
creating repository backups;
changing the look of the interface;
associating XSL transformation scripts and CSS stylesheets to obtain different target outputs (HTML, PDF, etc.).

The Temporal Modeling Project is a SpecLab-affiliated project at the University of Virginia.

"The practical goal of this project is to create a visual scheme and interactive tool set for the representation of temporal relations in humanities-based or qualitative research, with particular emphasis on the subjective experience of temporality. Its rhetorical goal is to bring visualization and interface design into the early content modeling phase of humanities computing projects, with an eye toward both enriching the design aspects of established scholarly endeavors and making humanities computing attractive and comprehensible to students and faculty without specialized technical skills. (from About this Project) TextPattern is an open-source content management system by Dean Allen with a very clean interface that relies on PHP and a mySQL backend. Images are kept in a separate gallery, from which links to include in posts can be generated.

TextPattern also includes integrated Textile support,for those who want to use the "humane web text generator." However, TextPattern requires substantial knowledge of CSS, and dosn't have the default templates of other CMS systems like Movable Type. TAPoR is building a unique human and computing infrastructure for text analysis across Canada by establishing six regional centers to form one national text analysis research project. A major development by the project is an online portal that is a gateway to tools for sophisticated analysis and retrieval, along with representative texts for experimentation. The local centers will also support text research laboratories with best-of-breed software and full-text servers that are coordinated into the national portal.

The TAPoR portal was released in alpha form on November 19th, 2004. It allow users to define texts that they want to study, define tools they use (from a collection of aggregated web services) and then run tools on texts where both the texts and tools could be running off remote servers. People interested in trying the beta of the portal should contact Lian Yan at lyan (at) mcmaster (dot) ca. He can give qualified people accounts to test the portal.

The portal will be released as "open source" so that units with the expertise can set up their own portals. We encouage people with tools to work with us to set them up as web services capable of operating through the portal. We also encouage people interested in just the tools to look at some of the tools suites independently of the portal. For example the TAPoRware tools are available for use online or for download independent of the portal. Textile is a "humane web text generator" that allows users to write content for the web without knowledge of HTML. It provides a way of easily enriching web pages with historical or contemporary information that goes far beyond static jpg map images. It's easy for beginners, yet provides completely customisable power and distributed backend database connectivity for the expert. It's free for personal use.

TimeMap's unique time-handling provides an engaging and intuitive method of delivering historical, community, government, research and business information. Combining mapping and the time dimension gives new ways of visualising urban growth, the spread of empires, heritage sites, environmental change, weather patterns, traffic flow, earthquakes, mobile network faults, and much more ― ranging in time scale from millions of years to seconds.

TimeMap time-filters and animates maps on the fly, connects to datasets anywhere on the web and can search for and load thousands of local maps dynamically as you zoom and pan. TimeMap can filter huge datasets server-side and download only the data needed, or work standalone off a CD. It adapts legends dynamically as scale changes and generates hyperlinks on-the-fly between objects on the map and web pages, and is completely customisable with XML. Yet the applet weighs in at only 350K!

TimeMap's Windows tool, TMWin, allows you to build and publish interactive maps on your web site without any programming skills. You can use your own data or map data from the Electronic Cultural Atlas Initiative's (www.ecai.org) data clearinghouse.

For advanced users TimeMap can be extensively customised with XML and JavaScript. TMJava source code is available to members of the TimeMap Open Source Consortium (see under Community).

The TimeMap project team provides rapid response support to all levels of user, from neophyte to IT professional, as well as a full range of custom database and TimeMap programming services.

This is an easy to use tool for building timelines. The tool employs a Java interface to allow users to add events, dates, and desciptions to their timelines. It also allows them some freedom to customize the icons, images, colors, and fonts used in their timelines. Once events are recorded and design elements chosen, the Java module produces an XML file which is in turn rendered in Flash and HTML.

The tool is useful but somewhat limited. the biggest problem is the buggy Java module. In the end, however, it's really just an XML authoring tool, and if you know XML, you can author your files yourself. The built-in display is also limited. The .swf file is locked, and it would be nice to be able to mess around with.

Created by Tim Wang at the University of British Columbia, the timeline tool is a web based learning object template which allows an instructor to quickly construct an interactive timeline with audio and visual effects. The finished timeline can serve as a re-useable learning object which can be easily distributed and shared over the web. This learning object template is built in Flash, PHP and XML.
